The best time of the year is around the corner for me. I am on vacation until the very beginning of august and shall spend most of it in South Africa enjoying the world cup. It is gonna be a great experience. I personally do not like the reasons that have been used to host the world cup in South Africa.
I know that Nelson Mandela fought for the country to be awarded the opportunity. He is a strong believer of reconciliation through sports. I give him a credit for the that but the racist structures and instituitions of Apartheid remain intact 16 years after the end of political apartheid.
There is no doubt that sport in general and football in particular can have a positive ramification on peoples' lives but South Africa has other priorities than building huge stadiums for millions of dollars.
You do not have to be a genius to understand that the world cup does not creat a miracle in a country where millions of people are suffering from AIDS and poverty. Temporry jobs are not gonna solve the deep-rooted injustice in the racist system of apartheid. What South Africa needs is a radical change which gives economical empowerment to the majority blacks who are still lagging behind the whites in all aspects of life standard.
FIFA, Coca-cola, Mccdonalds and other big multinational companies are of course profiting beause of the world cup as never before whereas the grassroot people can not even make ends meet. I am not sure if I would grasp the BOER mindset but I look forward to socializing with people from all walks of life and creed. I hope to interview the controvercial ANC youth leader Julius Malama who has a strong opinion about the Boer. He has said: a good Boer is a dead Boer.
