Perestroika and Glasnost  är vad Eritrea behöver.

Man hållit separata minnesstunder överallt i världen.

Knowledge is powersa...

The horn shall rise from the ashes

The workshop group 2 that I participated at the  horn Africa conference, which was held in Lund in August 2013  for the 12th times,  tried to focus on possibilities and actions rather than problems.

Economic growth and human development: The role of managing natural resources:
- Are natural resources, curses or blessings?

- Natural resources have been viewed as a major source of conflicts so far but it should be rather a source of solution by a better management and distribution.

- The issue of ownership like land, minerals and other resources calls for a new approach when a weak state takes over or is in charge. Customary ownership is being mariginalized under such circumstances. Nomads and peasants are impoverished and weakened.

- Good governance would likely create the conditions for a fair distribution of resources and sense of belonging.

 - Transparency is another issue that needs to be stressed too. Descent investments on human beings is highly demanded. Wherever there is a growing demand for resources, the impact of globalization leads to governments to give concessions.

 - The IMF and worldbank have deprived the poor from being empowered and both economically and politically.

 - Corruption is one big challenge that needs to be tackled. Genocide has even taken place in some areas amidst " the scramble for resources".

 - The call for corporate  responsibility of companies and governments on the damages that have been inflicted upon innocent citrizens is on the upsurge which is a good news.

 - Accountablity of democracy is the way out through representative empowerment.

 - The question of who has the right to give permission to companies to work on the exploration of natural resources is a legitimate issue as despotic and dictatorial states use the revenue to oppress their own populations.

 - More participation of civil societies and independent institutions is a pre-condition for a new empowerment, capacity building and strengthning of the structures of the states in focus.

 - Non-functioning governments and states do encourage and fuel conflicts rather than solutions.

 - The question of compensation for local people who are displaced and directly affected needs more attention too.

 - Regime change is not always a guarantee for transparency at times as foreign interests interfere in the affairs of developing countries.

 - International actors need a framework to "behave well" when exploiting natural resources in other countries. You can call it a plateform, ethic code or mechanism needs to be drafted on a global scale.

 - Promotion of human rights, education and human development is also recomended by this workshop.

 - Economic and political sanctions against individuals,  nations, states and regions are not the solution for any problem.

 - "The code of behaviour" that needs to be drafted on an international level, should clarify the question of owneship on the behalf of UN, AU or whoever needs it. It is a very complex situation that needs to be adressed holistically. The human concerns are more alarming than anything else.

 - The environmental and climatic impacts are not given enough attention either. A new approach must be implemented  that accomodates all citizens who are stakeholders and concerned victims of all the efforts  of the so called "development agenda".

 - Allocating the same amount of money to local development for grassroot people is one way of showing some solidarity.

 - Local empowerment, transparency, ownership and accountability are the keynotes that are highly emphasized in this group.

 - Involving media awareness in a greater extent than ever is a must. Social media and traditional approaches could be used to enhance the role of natural resources to bring about sustainable solutions and developments too.

 - Skilled people to monitor companies are needed. Capacity building och creating a sense of ownesrhip is also demanded.

 - Involving human rights organizations to expose the abuse of natural resources by companies and governments could help to a certain extent.

 - In the case of the African continent, we call for the set up of a continental bank account in the name of "African development bank". The bank shall manage and distribute the incomes that spring from from  the resources across the continent on the premise of helping the most needy and impoverished.

Tidelag blir förbjudet i Sverige...Halleluja...

Rege-
ringen lägger till slut fram ett för-
slag om förbud mot tidelag som opposi-
tionen länge efterlyst, uppger Ekot.

I dag omfattar djurskyddslagen sexu-

Lagen föreslås träda i kraft

http://www.s-info.se/page/blogg.asp?id=515&blogg=58671

African philosophy

The existence and nature of African philosophy has been discussed for decades. The constant demand for African scholars to reveal African philosophical contribution to human learning and human civilization has three fundamental reasons according to a seminar on African philosophy held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia in 1974:

1. Prejudice

2. With the advent and later the intensification of colonialism, the major European ethnographers and social anthropologists portrayed Africans as possessing a pre-logical or non-logical mentality. And since the essence of philosophy is logic or rationality, Africans were therefore regarded as incapable of philosophy, properly so-called.

3. There was also a western European conception of the universe, a conception which has been given a rational formulation and expression in western scientific thought. This conception provides the foundation for a western mode of existence. In the face of Africa´s current unmistakable subjection to Europe; the agonising question was raised by some African intellectuals whether indeed there was a distinctively African conception of the universe and a mode of existence founded on this conception.

Philosophy can be defined in a broad or narrow sense as much as the concept “African”. The existence of European philosophy or eastern philosophy has never been questioned. When it comes to the cradle of humanity as I call the African continent, there seems to be unfounded assumptions and presumptions on the non-existence of critical thinking and complex thoughts which actually is absurd as wisdom, mythology and philosophy are the trademarks of the whole continent.

African philosophy is characterized by unity and complete encounter of all things and beings, which by reason of the dynamic character of African ontology, has surfaced on the communal structure of a society based on the division of labour and rights, in which man attains growth and recognition by how well he fulfils a function for the over – all – all well-being of the community (African philosophy 1974).

Philosophy refers methodologically, to a reflective, systematic, deep and through way of thinking and, historically, to a vast and rich display of subjects which have engaged the attention of different thinkers, at different times, in different climes: knowledge itself, its language, its methods, being and non-being, good and evil, unity and multiplicity, motion, the world, life and inanimate beings, man and the infinite being. Philosophy attempts to grasp the entire universe in a small number of principles (Ethiopian philosophy 1974:100).

African philosophy is part and parcel of this universal strife to make sense of our mere existence on the universe. Humanity has its origins in the African continent and so does philosophy!

Africa: La Francophonie, a neo-colonial political machine (opinion)

I today prefer to publish an article in its entirety  from Pambazuka News, by Antoine Roger Lokongo *, dated Monday, 29 October 2012. I have not even asked for his permission but in this  age of "globalization" and internet jungle, it should be fine to spread the gospel as long as I am open about where the sources come from.

"The Democratic Republic of Congo was recently the host of choice for ‘The 14th Summit Meeting of La Francophonie Heads of State and Governments’ which was held in the capital Kinshasa from 12 – 14 October 2012 and in which 3,000 delegates from 75 countries took part, including 15 heads of state.

‘La Francophonie’ stands for a wide network of institutions and projects aimed at developing the political, economic and cultural links between France and its former colonies, through training support, academic and students exchanges, promotion of the French language, cultural exhibitions, subsidies and so on (Renou 2002).

Britain too maintains a particular relationship with its former African colonies through the ‘Commonwealth’, Portugal through the ‘Lusophonie’ for Portuguese speaking countries.

The Francophonie summit has been hailed by the Congolese government as ‘a great diplomatic success’ which has propelled the country to find its place on the international scene again, especially at this very moment when Congolese people in the east continue to be subjected to ‘the most barbaric atrocities [by Rwanda-supported Tutsi insurgents]’, in the words of former Senegalese president Abdou Diouf, the current Secretary General of the Francophonie in his opening address (Radio Okapi Live, Kinshasa, 12.10.2012); a cure from ‘Congo pessimism’ or ‘Congo bashing’ and the beginning of Congo’s ‘opening up’.

The Summit therefore called for the end of impunity following the killing of more than 5 million Congolese, the systematic rape of women, rape being used as a weapon of war, and the systematic looting of Congo’s natural and mineral resources, especially the mineral coltan needed for the manufacture of mobile phones, computers, satellites…. The Summit therefore re-affirmed La Francophonie’s attachment to Congo’s territorial integrity which must be preserved at all costs, as Congolese President Joseph Kabila indicated, considering three possible solutions at the same time to neutralize those ‘negative forces’ from Rwanda: political, diplomatic and military (Radio Okapi Live, Kinshasa, 12.10.2012).

‘We have been accused of being too much open to other partners including China but now, behold, the opening is also made in the direction of our traditional partners, the Francophone countries of North and South,’ said Isidore Ndaywel, the Summit’s Congolese Commissioner, writer and historian, in an interview he gave to Colette Braeckman of the Belgian daily Le Soir. (Braeckman 2012).

So why the choice of the Democratic Republic of Congo at this particular time? The size of the DRC (as big as the whole of western Europe); a former Belgian colony (not a French one ) with its 70 million French-speaking inhabitants. French is the DRC’s official language and in most French-speaking countries, the DRC included, parents no longer teach their children their own African languages, a fact that contributes to cultural alienation. At the same time Westerners are flocking to China to learn the Chinese language. This should teach Africans a lesson.

France therefore fears to lose a big French-speaking country such as the DRC should it veer toward the Commonwealth camp; and the arrival of China in the DRC sends shivers down the West’s spine. The DRC’s importance also stems from its geopolitical and strategic position at the heart of the continent; its fertile land, benign climate, natural tourist attractions and, particularly, its mineral resources.

Addressing the Summit, French President François Hollande said: ‘The future of the Francophonie is here in Africa. It is you who will carry the French, its values, its diversity and its requirements at the same time. Our common homeland, in the words of a great French writer Albert Camus, is the French language.’ (Radio Okapi Live, Kinshasa, 12.10.2012).

The truth of the matter is that the West in general and France in particular cannot do without Africa; especially now that the global financial crisis caused by the corruption of the Western financial system is biting and indeed threatening the economic viability of many NATO countries for which Africa is indispensable given their significant economic interests there. In fact the theme of the Summit was ‘Environmental and economic challenges facing the global governance’. The war waged by the United States of America and its NATO allies against Libya and Côte d'Ivoire for oil explains it all. Unending Western-backed Rwandan and Ugandan military incursions in eastern Congo to loot minerals is another fact.

In fact, former President Jacques Chirac acknowledged that ‘without Africa, France will slide down into the rank of a third [world] power’ (Leymarie 2008, 58). That was in 2008. Now France is the fifth strongest economic power in the world (thanks to Africa) but Brazil, a third world power, which has just overtaken Great Britain as the sixth world economic power is also poised soon to overtake France and become the fiftth strongest economic power (Guichard 2012).

Chirac’s predecessor François Mitterand already prophesied in 1957 that ‘Without Africa, France will have no history in the 21st century’ (Mitterand 1957, 237).

Former French foreign minister Jacques Godfrain for his part confirmed that ‘a little country [France], with a small amount of strength, we can move a planet because [of our] relations with 15 or 20 African countries...’.This is consistent with France’s ‘Françafrique’ policies, which aim to perpetuate a particular ‘special relationship’ with its former African colonies (Mbeki 2011).

So, why is Africa so important to France? Renou suggests three reasons: (1) Maintaining an international status independent of American and Chinese influences (the Soviet Union yesterday); (2) Securing a permanent access to strategic resources; (3) Benefiting from a monopolistic situation. To attain these objectives and maintain its power over its former colonies, France has to pursue a global policy that would be economic, political and cultural (Renou 2002).

It is our firm belief that, in the 21st century, Africa does not need all these remnants frameworks of colonialism, call it Commonwealth, Francophonie, Lusophonie, and so on. We have two reasons why Africa should turn its back on La Francophonie particularly:

1. FRANCE DOES NOT RESPECT AFRICA

In fact France still considers African countries as its colonies. Unlike his predecessors, former French President Nicholas Sarkozy went as far as insulting Africa, when in a speech in Dakar, the capital of Senegal, he said: ‘Africa has no history and the African man has not fully entered history’ Ankomah 2007. Sarkozy took a leaf from French philosopher Victor Hugo, who at a state banquet on 18 May 1879 said exactly the same: ‘Africa has no history ... In the nineteenth century, the White man made a man out of the Black man. In the twentieth century, Europe will create a new world out of Africa by connecting it to the civilized world.’ (Hardy 2008).

We believe that if you deny Africa, the cradle of humanity, and African people the builders of Ancient Egypt, any history (just as the first European settlers denied the Red Indians any history), you deny them also their humanity. The consequences cannot be weighed!

Some authors have seen France’s traditional African policy as being equivalent to the American Monroe Doctrine. Although different in their purposes, both doctrines justify, mainly through historical and geographical arguments, the exclusive control by France and the United States (Latin America in this case) of what they regard as their ‘private backyard’ (arrière-cours). This is reflected in a number of French expressions used to describe Francophone African countries, such as domaine réservé (private domain), chasse-gardée (exclusive hunting ground) or pré-carré (natural preserve), which prescribe the backyard as being ‘off limits’ to other great powers.

That is why, the presence at the helm of France’s former colonies of an independent, principled, unmanipulable and experienced leadership is regarded as an obstacle as such. The installation of weak, dependent and inexperienced pawns who can be guided along to deliver the country to Western superpowers on a platter is being pursued to this day.

2. SO-CALLED ‘SPECIAL RELATIONSHIP’ FOSTERS FRENCH INTERESTS

So it is an ‘un-commonwealth’ relationship, as Zimbabweans call it since their country withdrew from the Commonwealth in 2003. If you look at the economic integration among countries that share the Communauté Financière d'Afrique (CFA) franc as a common currency, you will notice that the French Treasury is holding billions of dollars owned by the African states of the Francophone nations of West and Central Africa in its own accounts and invested in the French Bourse or Stock Exchange. The Africans deposit the equivalent of 85 percent of their annual reserves in these accounts as a matter of post-colonial agreements and have never been given an accounting for how much the French are holding on their behalf, in what have these funds been invested, and what profit or loss there have been. In fact these countries require the permission of France before they sign any contract with China! (Lokongo 2012). How free are they?!

Before heading to Kinshasa, President François Hollande proclaimed the end of ‘Françafrique’ in Dakar called for ‘a new partnership between France and Africa based on respect, clarity and solidarity as well as new economic relations that favour Africa most’ (CCTV Report: ‘Hollande defends UN resolution on Mali’, 14.10.2012). Let Holland begin by dismantling the CFA colonial arrangement and we will believe him.

The way forward for Africa is to be united and to go the Chinese way as well as the South American way. The Chinese way because we have to rely on ourselves instead of continuing to be dependent on our former colonizers, protect our sovereignty and demand a new relationship with them based on our own terms, on mutual respect and win-win cooperation. We have to make France and other Western countries realize that they should stop ‘cutting the same tree branch on which they are sitting’ (African proverb).

South American countries are succeeding exactly because they have reached their own consensus instead of trusting the Commonwealth, Francophonie, Lusophonie, Washington Consensus and so on. As Noam Chomsky puts it, in the past decade, for the first time in 500 years, South America has taken successful steps to free itself from Western domination, another serious loss for America. The region has moved towards integration, and has begun to address some of the terrible internal problems of societies ruled by mostly Europeanized elites, tiny islands of extreme wealth in a sea of misery. They have also rid themselves of all US military bases and of IMF controls. A newly formed organization, CELAC, includes all countries of the hemisphere apart from the US and Canada. If it actually functions, that would be another step in American decline, in this case in what has always been regarded as ‘the backyard’ (Chomsky 2012).

Having said that, we agree with Algerian writer Kateb Yacine who wrote that ‘La Francophonie is a neo-colonial political machine, which only perpetuates our alienation, but the usage of the French language does not mean that one is an agent of a foreign power; and I write in French to tell the French that I am not French’ (Djaout 1987, 9). Colonisation was not jut a ‘historical mistake’ as President François Hollande said in Dakar before heading to Kinshasa. It was the very denial of the African person’s humanity."

Chinua Achebe shall never fall apart.

Chinua Achebe - a  great writer and intellectual passed away a couple of weeks ago. His works on the impact of colonialism on indigenous culture and civilization have been monumental. His death is a big loss not only for the African continent but the entire world.

“Things fall apart” has been sold in millions of copies across the planet. The description on the cover of the book says it all:

“A simple story of a “strong man” whose life is dominated by fear and anger, Things fall apart is written with remarkable economy and subtle irony. Uniquely and richly African, at the same time it reveals Achebe´s keen awareness of the human qualities common to men of all times and places.”

This is indeed a literary master piece published in 1959 in the eve of Nigerian independence and before the Biafra civil war erupted. Decolonizing the mind and feeling a strong sense of belonging in one´s own language and culture is something that I attribute to most of African writers like Ngùgí WA Thiong ´o and Chinua Achebe.

I have to admit that I did not get that impression when I first read the book back in the days when I was young, naïve and a bit bewildered in Babylon. I of course understand and experience the work in a new light now. This is one of the good things with getting old or aging. A middle-aged man on the making is a bit frightening but as long as I keep on reading, I feel on the top of the world and forever young.

A fatal car accident made Achebe paralyzed in the beginning of the 1990s but his excellent contribution in literature continued unabated. He was a true son of Africa who will be missed for ever.

Other people have also died recently like the great Hugo Chavez of Venezuela who on his own literally liberated Latin America from the yoke of USA´s neo-colonialism.

South America used to be America´s backyard and military coups were the order of the day as recently as a decade or so ago. South America is a different place now and Hugo deserves much of the credit in combination with the brave brothers and sisters in that continent.

The song “Ding dong thank God the witch is dead” made it to second place on the BBC charter but it was barely played on the Radio as Margaret Thatcher –Maggie – the iron lady remains a divisive figure as much as in life as in death.

I am not a great fan of celebrating people´s death as it is entirely unacceptable in Eritrean culture even when your worst enemy dies. I just wished Hugo had as long life as Margaret.

Some people die too early. Great black leaders, musicians and intellectuals like Frantz fanon, Walter Rodney, Steve Biko, Kwame Toure who was known as Stokley Carmichael first, Thomas Sankara, Martin Luther King junior, Malcolm X, Patrice Lumumba, Kabral, Nkrumah, Marshal, Samora Michel and all the leaders of black panthers and many others have unfortunately left us too young.

I pray for all of them to rest in peace.

Varför just jag hela tiden?

"My book, my friend."

The 12th Asmara bookfare is taking place under the theme:”My book, my friend” at expo. It started a week ago and is going to be closed on Sunday. I have seen a lot of people from all walks of life coming to expo and buying books.

The reading culture here in Eritrea is still on its initial stage but this annual event of focusing on books is already having a positive impact on that front. School children have had opportunities to talk with writers who could inspire and give them some ideas about how to develop and nurture writing talents.

I bought four books: refuge boy by Benjamin Zephaniah, Tigringa-Tigringa dictionary by Tekie Tesfai, selected poems by Robert Creeley and an interview pamphlet with the Eritrean president from the 6th of august 1991, just a couple of months after Eritrean liberation.

I have already read Zephaniah´s book about a teenage boy called Alem whose parents are both from Eritrea and Ethiopia. The book was written amidst the latest war between the two countries 1998-2000 and describes the fate of a family in a devastating war.

Deportations, asylum seeking and xenophobia are some of the subjects that are dealt with in this book by the fascinating and thought provoking poet. He has really managed in capturing the imaginations of all readers by portraying and personifying the vulnerability of nations through the teenage boy Alem.

I speak, therefore I exist.

The very origin of language has to do with the very existence of Humanity. The variety and diversity of languages and cultures in the world implies how fast human development has spread linguistically.

Migration and displacement of people for different reasons has indeed contributed in that respect. God knows how many languages and dialects currently exist but to say thousands is an understatement.

Language has certainly existed as long as we have existed in different forms, shapes and levels of civilizations. Communication and understanding each other through language is something that is taken for granted but the cultural aspect and multidimensional parameters of its impact are often unappreciated.

There is a limit for the scope of the ambition and aspiration to achieve a certain goal both in the public and private sphere. The significance of language to enrich our lives and reach out others is beyond anyone´s doubt.

In African philosophy, “Language is a mirror of thoughts. Vocabulary and grammar help in the understanding of the conceptual frameworks and logical thought patterns of people.” (Seminar on African philosophy1976: 317).

My mission as a human-being is first and foremost to socialize, contextualize, deconstruct, humanize, rationalize and universalize in all my relationships with all creatures. These endeavours to make the world a better place would be fatal without language thereby I speak,  therefore I exist.

Too many eggs in the basket :-)

Time goes very fast as usual but nothing is running out of it for me right now at the same time. My patience and endurance here in Eritrea is paying off. I have been conducting my own research about nation-building in the country for some time. I have also studied some basic Arabic in the short time I have been here. I am currently working to fix a driving license too.

I am also engaged in a short project held by the ministry of health which tries to update the general situation for Malaria in Eritrea. We are trying to study the socio-cultural patterns among all the nine groups of people of the country in terms of their use of bed nets and tendencies to seek early treatment once affected by mosquitoes. We are interested in the change of behaviours or lack of it. What factors lie behind peoples ‘approach to Malaria, seen from an anthropological perspective is the main question?

Teaching “sociology of education” at SMAP College here in Asmara is in my calendar too. I shall start doing that in a few months time but I have to prepare the entire student material on my own which is very exciting and mesmerizing. Too many eggs in the basket right now but they do not have to be fetched simultaneously. I love it anyways.

By the way, I am quite used to the life here in Eritrea now to the degree that I sometimes miss the power cuts which still occur but it is much better than before. I feel it is a relief from constantly updating ourselves from TV and other electronic apparatus.

HOMEAGE TO ERITREAN CYCLISTS

HomEage and tribute  to Eritrean cyclists who are the champions of Africa and indeed the world as they are free of any doping unlike cyclists from the west. Tour de Eritrea has taken place across the country and Eritrea has prevailed once again.

The Algerians have given the Eritreans a good match but Eritrea remains number one in this continent. The cultural and traditional legacy  from the Italian colonial era might explain why bicycling is a national sport in here but the success of Eritrea as a nation is merely the result of hard-work and dedication of our beloved cyclists who train under meagre conditions.

The mountainous and barren/dry landscape makes training even harder but nothing is impossible if you have the will and determination to move mountains. “Never kneel down” is the Eritrean motto which has brought us amazing results in all aspects of life. Bicycling is no exception.

West Bromwich-Tottenham verse Nigeria-Ivory Coast

Why should a football match between West Bromwich and Tottenham matters more for Eritreans than a quarter final between the giants of West Africa Nigeria and Ivory Coast in the African cup of nations? I am enjoying the African cup of nations which is taking place in South Africa right now. Our neighbours, the Ethiopians, have participated in the tournament for the first time after 31 years. I was not able to see any of their matches as it was not sent on Eritrean TV but I have followed the other matches and teams attentively.

The Ethiopians had a pretty mediocre tournament in this 29th edition of nation’s cup. They drew one all to Zambia but lost 4-0 and 2-0 to both Burkina Faso and Nigeria respectively. These two teams have made it to the semifinals together with Mali and Ghana which is one of the favorites to win the tournament this time. The other favorite team was Ivory Coast which was eliminated by Nigeria in the quarter finals. I do not miss the host Bafana Bafana South Africa which lost to Mali on penalty shootouts the other day. Mali against Nigeria and Burkina Faso against Ghana are going to fight it out in the semifinals on Wednesday. The nation’s cup has not made any breakthrough in Eritrea at all. People seem to care less about it than the Barclays premier league, to my dismay and disappointment. Pan-Africanism is not the number one priority among the population as yet. They have other issues of like making ends meet instead.

The premier league should not be as big as it is here in Eritrea. You will find cinemas and TV-places where they show the English league even in small communities and villages. It is amazing how English football is engaging many Eritreans. It was frustrating to find a place in Keren yesterday as they were showing West Bromwich against Tottenham everywhere instead of the quarter finals between Nigeria and Ivory Coast in the nation’s cup. I was very much worried not to miss the match between the African giants and walked throughout Keren looking for bars and restaurants to see the match but it was entirely in vain. I thought that the TV in my hotel room did not have the sport channel except for the national Eri-TV. I did not even figure out that I could search it on the TV but I and the restaurant steward at Keren hotel where I stayed went up to my room and searched for the right sport channel two and found it after some efforts, to my relief and joy. The quality of the pictures was not of a world class but I could follow the match reasonably well even if I was a bit sleepy.

The question of why Eritreans care more about English teams in general and Arsenal (the gunners) in particular is the million dollar question. I keep on asking them what the special thing is with this team. Their answers of course vary but many say Arsenal plays the best football in the world and it is the team which is deprived of justice by the referees as much as Eritrea lacks that stuff in the international arena. Diverting your attention from everyday stress and worries is a normal human behaviour but why the English league is supposed to be the best and the most exciting in the world is a bad joke and a mysterious myth for me. The answer is probably nowhere to be found. Some things just fascinate us without any tangible reasons especially when it comes to favourite teams in football. What I do not like most is the preference for a foreign league instead of encouraging the domestic league which is barely attended by that many people these days. The English league is killing Eritrean soccer.

The comparison between arsenal and the Eritrean struggle is pretty funny and ironic because the ball is round and anything can happen on a pitch in a football match unlike the politics of the belly on a global scale. I say Glory to the African cup of nations. I hope Mali takes it for the first time!

Free Palestine; free west Papua and free Western Sahara now.

The demand for freedom, liberation and independence for the people of West Papua from Indonesia, Western Sahara from the kingdom of Morocco and Palestine from the Jewish state of Israel must be intensified. The yoke of colonialism and apartheid is over and every nation has the right to self-determination up to secession if the will of the people is to be respected.

The former colonial power of West Papua was, the Dutch that paved the way for the Indonesian brutal occupation of West Papua since 1969. The people of west Papua lack the support of the “international community” as their struggle for independence has barely been reported. Indonesia continues to harass torture and kill the entire population. West Papua has gold, forest and even oil which has exasperated the situation in the country as Indonesia is not willing to allow the population to hold a plebiscite about the future state of the land.

The people have therefore taken arms and are waging low scale guerilla warfare. The Indonesian government has allowed hundreds and thousands of Indonesians to move into West Papua from the mainland in order to weaken the independence movement and realize the annexation of the land without any attention from the outside world. There is no secret these days and the Melanesian island should and would get its freedom sooner or later. They need our support in that struggle though.

Morocco does the same with the population of Western Sahara which was a Spanish colony that was annexed by Morocco in 1975. Western Sahara faces the same reality as West Papua. There are a lot of minerals especially phosphor in the land and Morocco does not have the will to give up this wealth any time soon. France and the USA support Morocco. Polisario has been fighting for independence for decades but has held a cease fire for years now in the hope of being able to hold a referendum in the near future.

Morocco is though frustrating the whole process and is doing everything possible to delay and dismantle the aspiration of the people of Western Sahara for a total independence. Thousands of Moroccans have been encouraged to move to Western Sahara through special beneficial deals that puts the existence of Western Sahara as an own entity in jeopardy.

Israel gets away with whatever violation of human rights it practices against the state of Palestine or any neighboring country as the “international community” suffers from the guilt feeling of the Jewish genocide during the Second World War. The holocaust of the Jewish people as a crime against humanity shall never be denied and downplayed in its significance to understand the dark sides of humanity but that issue should be held separately from Palestine. Anti-Semitism is not the concern here but the right for self-determination for the Palestinians.

The creation of the state of Israel in 1948 caused the exodus of the Palestinians in their hundreds and thousands. The Palestinians rightfully refer to that year as Naqba meaning catastrophe. They still live in refugee camps in the region under dire conditions. I wonder why some people and states enjoy a total impunity without taking responsibility for their actions. The British should take their part of the blame for the way Palestine has been handled by the United Nations and the Arab world. I do not see any reason for the continued occupation of Palestine by Israel in the name of “security concerns”.

Over six hundred thousands of Israeli settlers are spread throughout the holy land of Palestine now. They are not going to leave their “homes” without an armed resistance even after an eventual peace deal is struck one day. Jerusalem shall be the capital city of a free Palestine. No compromise in this regard.

The same policies of racial oppression and suppression are taking place in all the three colonies mentioned here. They call for the assistance of citizens of the world with some conscience and decency left in their minds.

Namibia, Eritrea, East more, South Sudan and many other territories have succeeded to gain full independence in the last 23 years or so after decades of bitter struggle. I am sure Palestine, West Papua and Western Sahara shall achieve that in the near future. It is not a question of if but when. Only time will tell. What if that could be realized soon enoughInsha’Allah!

Enough is enough!

Free Palestine; free west Papua and free Western Sahara now.

NAKFA

Welcome to the place of Resilience. These words welcome you on the slogan board on arrival to the historical and garrison town of Nakfa. It is located roughly 210 kilometers from Asmara and lies in the north red sea region of Eritrea where the landscape is full of barren land and Rocky Mountains.

I felt the same way as I did when I came to Timbuktu, in Northern Mali in 2003 for the first time. A feeling of bewilderment and awe for the unknown in a way. My imaginations and the reality I faced there did not match each other. Nakfa like Timbuktu is not any vibrant and prospering town.

It felt as being in the middle of nowhere and reaching the end of the world at the same time but the outside appearance with dust and sandy roads is as always deceiving. Looks is indeed deceiving. So much history and resilience embodied in these two places.

It is as the late blues legend Ali Farka Toure once famously said about Timbuktu. It is not in the middle of nowhere but in the centre of the world where life has its alpha and omega. I could say the same about Nakfa despite the boredom and lack of activity.

The majority of the people who live there belong to the lovely Tigre group. Their language Tigre is, in my view, one of the most wonderful one in the world. It was very nice and refreshing for my ears to be exposed to it. It is quite similar to Tigrigna bur more melody and rhythm in to it. It should be the official language of Eritrea.

The significance of Nakfa as a symbol of Eritrean resistance against Ethiopian occupation is beyond the capacity of words to express its real importance. The mountainous town was, at some point in the middle of the 1970s, the only place in Eritrea that was not under an Ethiopian control. The freedom fighters of Eritrea had to make strategically decisive withdrawals after having gained almost a total liberation of Eritrea except for Asmara and some other small towns in the surrounding of the capital at that particular decade.

The Ethiopians never managed to force out our brothers and sisters from the mountains and endless trenches and fortresses ala Vietnam that they had built during the fierce battles. Underground clinics and hospitals were also built in the desert of Sahel. It was mind-blowing to see this place where I and my friend Goitom spent this weekend. We met a former guerilla fighter who acted as a good guide for us. We also stayed in another historical and very important town of Keren.

Eritrea is full of Rocky Mountains and the reason is said to be “the summit of mountains” which took place in the medieval ages between all the mountains of the world here in Eritrea. The mountains from countries like Afghanistan and Pakistan liked it here in Eritrea and never went back “home” but stayed here and sought asylum instead.

We were entirely taken by the heroism and determination of the fighters. It is even rumoured that the Ethiopians could have been able to run over the trenches if they had not waited for the dictator Mengistu Hailemariam´s special force and infantry brigade to make the final entry.

Rumours and hearsays with all respect but nothing could have stopped Eritrean independence. The Americans, Russians, Chinese, Cubans, East Germans and many others supported Ethiopia militarily and politically to no avail. The victory of the Eritrean forces at the battle of Afabet in 1988 singlehandedly signalled to all of us that Eritrean liberation was imminent. It was an inevitable and a priceless victory which humiliated and demoralized the Ethiopian forces for ever. We passed by Afabet and had breakfast on the way to Nakfa and back.

The victory in the port town of Massawa in 1990 was also equally significant. Eritrea was eventually totally liberated on May 24, 1991. Hundreds and thousands of Ethiopian soldiers were taken prisoners of war. A plebiscite was held two years later when 99.8 % of the Eritrean population voted for independence.

I remember the day clearly when I voted at folkets (ABF) Hus in Lund, Sweden in may 1993, for the first time in my entire life. This was the day when it finally dawned for Eritreans across the planet after hundreds of years of colonialism and occupation.

The Eritrean currency is rightfully is named after the historical town of Nakfa. I am doing a freelance research now and have been given the green light by the centre for research and documentation of Eritrea. I am embarking on an exciting journey that would be very enriching and thoughtful for me. I would like to look at the stability and peaceful situation in Eritrea from an anthropological perspective, beyond the surface, through a qualitative study of field work. The questions that are going to be raised are:

 What are the bases of Eritrean identity that have contributed to the national harmony?

 Why do people identify themselves first and foremost as Eritreans and not as different ethnic and religious entities which is the case in many African countries?

 What does being an Eritrean imply to the people of this country: Tigre, Bilen, Nara, Kunama, Tigrigna, Afar, Saho, Rashaida and Hidareb?

 Nation-building and democracy are endless processes which take time. Two decades is pretty short time in this context. Eritrea, being located in a very turbulent region with limited economic resources, has succeeded in avoiding civil war based on ethnic/religious tensions that are usually the undercover reasons of socio-economic and political disenchantments’. What explains this development?

 Is there any unilateral Eritrean culture or mindset that explains the nature of this nation?

In order to answer these questions, I intend to perform an empirical study on the field by interviewing people that would be representative for the research. The methodology and scope for my research is still a work in progress that gives way for flexibility and an open discussion.

I look forward to pursue this research for a long time and not having a deadline is very fine with me at this moment.

No tempest in Asmara, Eritrea, sunny and bright

Asmara, Eritrea is a quite and calm city as usual. People are going about their business as ever before. The western media has exaggerated about what actually  happened  here on monday. There is no point in speculating about things that you have no information about.

There is neither a mutiny by renegade soldiers nor a military coup. Wishful thinking and reality are often on a collision terms. I live here and do not see any reason to feel agitated by the reports of the media.

Eritrean independence and liberation shall always be defended by its brave citizens. We Eritreans shall never give the west and Ethiopia a pretext to invade us in the name of the "protection of human rights" and democracy. Eritrea for Eritreans and Eritrean problems call Eritrean solution.

France infantilizes its former colonies

I remember vividly travelling throughout West Africa: Senegal, Mauritania, Mali, Guinea-Conakry, The Gambia and Cape Verde back in 2003. Coming to Timbuktu and Niafunke - the birth place of the Blues legend Ali Farka Toure was indeed the most exciting and inspiring part of this whole soul- searching journey to that part of the world.

I was trying to follow the traces of the slave trade and visiting “the former slave houses” in different countries in this region gave me a new spectrum and perspective on life which broadened my parameters and scope on West Africa. Mali being one of the poorest countries on the planet has had a number of rebellions by the Tuareg people in the vast desert area. The entities which compose the nation-state have never been strong enough in Mali. The fragmental nature of its institutions and the lack of economic progress has always been the centre of all the difficulties that the nation has faced for decades.

The current crisis in Mali can only be understood holistically if the historical perspective of the French colonialism is taken into account. The French has always advocated “infantilization” and “assimilation” of their former colonies.

French interests in the natural resources of many countries in Africa have always been defended through massacre and warfare like in Ivory Coast, Libya, etc. France has many military bases across Africa to achieve these goals. Why the Malian government and army are so weak to the extent that they need the “help” of France is a very legitimate question that everybody needs to ask.

Professor Jeremy Keenan´s article in New African January 2013 is mind blowing in this respect. He believes that it is the US and Algerian covert activities which sowed the seeds of the conflict by creating terrorist groups like Islamic Maghreb and others in order to justify their launching of a new Saharan front in the “Global war on Terror”. I am not so much into conspiracy theory but the argument of the professor makes sense to me from a standpoint of a pan-Africanist. The Americans have been working hard to have military bases across Africa – AFRICOM, to no avail for years.

The current mess in Mali allows foreign intervention and gives another excuse for the “fight against terrorism”. I dislike the fundamentalists who are destroying and terrorizing the population in Northern Mali but I can not understand the logic of calling the former colonial master to “save you” from those who are created by the west from the beginning. It takes a mental slavery to behave this way. You have different deficiencies of Francophone, Anglophone, Lusophone but thanks God there is nothing called Italiphone to my knowledge!

Imagine Eritrea calling for the Italians to save us from rebels or an eventual Ethiopia invasion. It is completely unthinkable and unimaginable thanks to our self-determination and mindset of self-reliance/self-sufficiency.

No body denies the fact that the overthrow of Muhammad Kaddafi and the Libyan war spilled over into Mali as the rebels there used to fight for the late colonel but Malian problems do not call for a military solution alone.

There is no conflict that could be solved without the facilitation of political settlement which advocates social justice and fair distribution of resources in Mali. Keenan concludes: Washington´s Global War on Terror has come home to roost for the peoples of the Sahara.

Philosophy is perhaps the very purpose of life

The New Year 2013 has been around for a week and a half now. I do not have any particular new year´s resolution per se to live up to but I keep on questioning status quo and pondering over life unabated.

I want to believe that Humania is condemned to a lifetime freedom.

What does freedom entail though on an individual level?

*Pursuing your goals and desires without any hindrance,

*Doing whatever you want to do without affecting other people negatively,

*To be your own boss,

*To be where you want to be,

*To have the means to travel as much as you want,

*To feel total happiness and equanimity with the ups and downs in the mundane of life, etc.

The absence of daily routine and social context seems to be taking its toll on me right now. Job opportunities do not exist in abundance here in Eritrea as it is a country still resurrecting from the devastation of war. The current situation with neither war nor peace is not helping either as the country needs to be vigilant towards its enemies in the horn of Africa and beyond.

“Creating your own work” is the melody everywhere right now. I have been thinking about different areas of business but I do not feel that I am the right person to be selling and buying things. It is not in my DNA at all. Trying it may open up my mind, so I prefer not to say never ever in the business world.

I have also to admit the fact that the Lutheran culture of work-holism does not appeal to me and has never appealed before either. I have never thought that working 8 hours a day Monday-Friday is the ultimate meaning of life even if it is something one enjoys doing. Life is too short just to be entirely spent at a working place with colleagues and assignments you most dislike.

A responsible citizen of the world full of bewilderment and wonderings can not stop thinking about the very purpose of life.

I am reading Alain De Botton´s book “The consolations of philosophy” (2000). He refers to the philosophy of Socrates, Epicurus, etc. in ancient Greece and tries to give us some consolations in times of feeling unpopularity, not having enough money, frustration, inadequacy, a broken heart and all sorts of difficulties.

The emphasis is on being a critical citizen by asking uncomfortable questions. “Conventional wisdom” exerts a lot of pressure on individuals to follow mainstream opinions that compel them to do things they actually do not enjoy.

One should ask what success and failure mean as everything in between is a journey of wisdom that engenders a lot of lessons. No one is a looser in these endeavours in my view. Everyone is just trying to make sense of their mere presence on this planet which has not welcomed us all with open arms and equal rights and opportunities.

Humility before all challenges in life is a must as we did not after all apply for an entry visa to come to this world. It was our parents who took that crucial decision and thought that we would be having some nice time on earth. We might not be having that fun all the time but it is still okay to be above the ground and experience things that give us new perspectives.

It takes more than a gut to stand for the true virtues and convictions of the life path one has decided to follow and die for it as Socrates did. Facing death with that sort of composure amidst a crowd who behaved like a bunch of wild animals is indeed inspiring even now in 2013, more than 2400 years later.

The philosophy of Epicurus focused on the importance of pleasure. He asserts that:

“Pleasure is the beginning and the goal of a happy life confirming what many had long thought but philosophy had rarely accepted. The philosopher confessed his love of excellent food:

“The beginning and root of every good is the pleasure of the stomach. Even wisdom and culture must be referred to this.”

Philosophy properly performed was to be nothing less than a guide to pleasure:

“The man, who alleges that he is not yet ready for philosophy or that the time for it has passed him by, is like the man who says that he is either too young or too old for happiness.” (Ibid: 50-51).

Freedom, Friendship and thought are the three most important components of happiness for Epicurus.

Freedom requires taking responsibility for the life of yourself and others. To be exempted from doing things that are boring and exhausting does not necessarily mean that one has more freedom than others unless this exemption gives opportunity to other individuals to realize their full potentials.

Human beings are social animals and their need for confirmation is more omnipresent than other creatures. Friendship is the ultimate resort where your weakness and strength become the focal point of attention. True friends care and raise critical issues that develop you as a human being.

Descartes theory of “Cogito, ergo sum” comes to my mind when I think of “thought”. I think therefore I exist. Thinking makes us question, doubt, feel anxiety and uncertainty for the rest of our lives as long as we claim to be homosapiens.

Life would probably be much more boring if we had all the answers for all our questions. Philosophy might not give us “happiness” as such but provides us with the tools to pursue the very purpose of us being wherever we are at this moment. A healthy and prosperous living means philosophising full time until the last breathes of our lives.
